Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God's people had been waiting for someone sent by God who would make things right again between God and his people. This person was the Messiah. "Messiah" is a Hebrew word that means "Anointed." "Christ" is the Greek word for Messiah. So when Peter tells Jesus, "You are the Christ," what he really says is, "You are the Messiah, the One we have all been waiting for!"
